Keeping your skimmer box clean not only contributes to the overall appearance of your pool, but also to the long-term health of your equipment. Read on to learn how to keep your skimmer box free of debris.
What is the Skimmer?
The skimmer box is a square or rectangular opening located at the waterline of the pool. Water and debris float in it while the filter pump is running. Water passes through the filter and pump, while debris remains trapped in the skimmer basket.
The skimmer box is usually made of plastic and is protected by a door known as a weir. The weir attaches to the front of the skimmer box and opens and closes with the movement of the water. When the pump and filter are running, you will usually see it open. Typically, when the pump is off, it will remain mostly closed.
As a side note, the skimmer box contains drain lines that allow water to move to the filter while the pump is running. An above ground pool will likely have only one line, while many in ground pools will have two if there is also a floor drain.
How to clean the skimmer
Most skimmers contain a plastic basket or net that covers the drain lines.
Usually, simply removing the basket or net and emptying the contents will solve the problem. Sometimes, small debris gets stuck in the basket and it is very important to take the time to rinse or gently remove it. If the water flow to the pump is limited, the efficiency will decrease and you will likely hear the pump working harder than normal.
Pro tip : There is usually a second basket in the filter pump itself. If you hear strange noises or the pressure in the return lines is low, it is a good idea to check that too. It is a little more difficult to empty, but it is worth it.
Then put the basket back into the skimmer and reattach the lid.
How often should I clean the skimmer?
Pool skimmers should be cleaned often, anywhere from every day when you use the pool to once a week if you don’t see leaves or other debris floating in it.
You should check your skimmer basket regularly. In addition to the “expected” leaves and debris, unfortunately sometimes small animals (and lizards if you are in the south) can get into your pool and not be able to get out. While this is sad, it is a reality and can cause problems and blockages, so keep an eye on it.
Additionally, failure to clean the skimmer will lead to blockages further down the system that will require professional help. For example, you may find that the pump suction isn’t working properly, and unless you’re handy, you’ll need help.
Failure to clean the skimmer box can reduce the life of the pump and seals. This can be costly in the long run.
Cleaning also depends on the weather, wind and the number of trees in the garden or yard.
If you take the time to clean your skimmer along with the rest of your pool, you will benefit for years to come and have peace of mind knowing that you, your family and friends are swimming in a clean pool.
